The Marcona almonds are a highly sought-after type of Spanish almond, characterized by a texture more similar to macadamia nuts, being rounder compared to the more common California almond. The taste is sweet and buttery with a crunchy texture: very moist to the taste and with a delicate heart, the Marcona has an aroma and flavor that recall freshly baked pastries.
The fried and lightly salted almonds are considered the "Queens of the Spanish Aperitif," perfect for a gourmet break: great on their own or paired with a good platter of cheese and Iberian cured meats.
What makes Spanish almonds special?
The Almondeli almonds come from the numerous almond trees owned by the company, extending over more than 200 hectares. Among these, the varieties cultivated are Marcona and Valencia, fruits of a very long-lived tree, the Prunus Amygdalus. The almond tree can reach heights of about ten meters with five-petaled white or slightly pink flowers, and its productivity increases with age, reaching its peak around eighteen years, producing 75-90 quintals of almonds with hulls and shells per year.
The harvest takes place mainly in the summer when the seed reaches a solid state: Mediterranean almond farming is mostly carried out in small family-run orchards, just like Almondeli, which is why the harvest, unlike in California, is still done manually.
